RAILWAYS AND ADVERTISING.
LETTER BY HON. F. J, RO f.LESTON.
Tho South Island Motor Union is in receipt of the following letter from the Aotiiig-Mm.btcr of Railways (Hon. F. J. Rolleslon), in regard to advertising on Railway property “The po'icy oi the Railway Department in this mallei',” the Minister said, ‘is to take advantage of the business offered by advertisers ami to give m return the best possible service i'u the art, style and display of its advertising inedia. “While so stating tiie position, however, I hasten to add that no advertising matter will be displayed by the Department where there its reasonable ground to believe tliai natural beauty of the surroundings will be interfered with. “Jf members of your Union have in mind any advertisement controlled by the Railway Department winch they consider comes within this category, L will he only too pleased to have the matter looked into, and if roasonab'e justification for complaint is found to exist, cause the advertisement giving offence to bo removed without delay.” Several members expressed the opinion that the Minister's letter was very satisfactory, and indicated a desire on the part of the Railway Department to fall in with the wishes of motorists in connection with the matter. ft was explained that it wins not asked that hoardings he removed in the towns, but that those obscuring beauty spots should he taken down. If was decided to write to the Minister thanking him for the way he had explained the position and for his assurance that hoardings to which exception could properly ho taken, would be removed.
