BUSINESS MEN’S ASSOCIATION

A meeting of the executive of the Business Men’s Association was hoin in the office of the secretary (Mr B. Hughes) on ’Wednesday aveiung. Present.—Messrs T. Knight (pre.si dent), S. Goddard, H. B. Strange, W. F. Evans, A. I). Cameron, and G. H. Clements. . Messrs H. .Dunn and H. llendra were appointed new members of the Association. Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., wrote stating that lie had put, before the Minister of Railways—but without success—the question of reserving scats on trains between Temuka and Christchurch. Ho Ami Id, however, approach the Departmental heads m Wellington when next up there.—-It was decided that Mr Burnett be thanked for his efforts. The secretary pointed ont that tlio Vssociation’s credit balance was now £K3 14s Cd, and there was one outstanding subscription at the end of the financial year. The chairman said the position was most satisfactory. _ It was the first time the Association had been in credit since they had run the picnic. Chas. Begg and Co. wrote stating that thev intended dnoating a. cup, to bo won bv the band securing the highest aggregate points m music nt the two tests and music of a. quickstop the cup to be von outright-.—Lt was'decided that the secretary write, expressing thanks to the firm. The .secretary of the South Island Bands’ Association wrote expressing pleasure that the Temuka. contest had been offered the “Boosey” Cup. He advised against including a hymn test, as there was already quite sufficient on the programme for the time 1 allowed. . „ ~ ~ . The secretary laid on the table newspapers from different parts ol New Zealand wiving prominence to the Temuka'contest. In the Rnngiora paper it was reported that the Rangiora Band had definitely decided to make a full entry. He also suggested that any members who had friends in the various centres where there are hands, should keep in touch and endeavour to interest them in the contest. The chairman said the secretary was doing a tremendous amount of work in connection with the contest—work which feiv of them know a great deal about. . , , . The secretary said that it had been reported to him that the Blackball (West Const) Band are looking for a conductor to bring them across. A letter was received from the Temuka Rugby Football Club in regard to co-operation in the matter of pennannntlv lighting the Domain with electricity. The Association was asked to convene a meeting of the various bodies interested, and take charge of the proposal generally. The chairman suggested leaving the matter in the hands of the Association’s Illumination Committee. Mr Clements said he thought it was a great .compliment to the Association to be asked to lead in the proposal. The chairman concurred, and after i some further discussion, it was decided j that the president and secretary call j a meeting, to bo held at as early a j date ns possible. . j Mr Strange said that a penny-in-the-slot telephone booth should be erected j at a convenient spot in the. borough. I After a discussion, it was agreed, on ! tlm motion of Messrs Strange and Clements, to make an application .to . tiie Department for the installation! of a. slot telephone. j On the suggestion of Mr Strange, | it was decided to draw the attention of tlie Borough Council to the fact that some culverts in King Street become blocked at times, and to suggest that the gutters be swept more often, in order to obviate the nuisance which arises from flooding.

The name of Mr C. L. Eraser was added to the Grounds Committee.

METHODIST SOCIA&

A very pleasant social was held in the Denmark Street Methodist Hall on Tuesday evening, when about fifty young people wero assembled. Rev. R. Richards explained that the social was an effort organised by Mesdames P. Thomas and Richardson, in aid of the toy stall for the ltcd-White-aud-Bluc Fair.

Songs wero rendered by Miss E. Bryan and Mr F. Mathieson, mid a pianoforte solo by Miss Mamie Ellis. A series of interesting games kept the evening alive, and several novel competitions wore also entered into heartily. The winners in the “Streets” competition were Mr W. Hewson and Miss Hilda Longson; in the “Fiower Wedding,” Miss Effie Bryant and Mr Alex Hewson, and of the “lucky parcel,” M iss Mamie Ellis. Before the evening concluded, Mr Thomas, in a neat speech, handed over to Mrs Hewson a goodly number of toys, together with an amount of cash towards her stall. Mrs Hewson suitably replying. Mr F. B. Cooper then thanked Mr and Mrs Thomas, on behalf of the church, for the energy and interest in arranging the evening, which was voted to he one of tho best that lias over been held.

BOWLING

TEMUKA v. ASHBURY.

Perfect weather prevailed when Terimka plaved a four-rink friendly match with Ashbury, at Temuka, yesterday afternoon. The result was somewhat unusual, as two rinks finished on even terms. In tho other two, Temuka wove comparatively easy winners. At tho conclusion of the match, Mr C. L. Fraser, vice-president of the Temuka, Club, thanked the Ashbury team for their visit, and said that it was ne.t the result that mattered; it was the friendlv spirit which prevailed throughout. Mr. Johnston, in reply, said that his team had enjoyed the outing very much, and they appreciated the hospitality and friendliness shown by tho Temuka Club.
