CROQUET.

DOM INION CHAMPIOXSH IPS. By Telegraph—Press Association. ' PALMERSTON N., Jan. 27. The Dominion croquet championships commenced today, in glorious weather. The competitors were welcomed by the Dominion president (Mr C. Caughley), who remarked that the entries were a record and the standard of competitors was equal to that of previous years. The surprise of the day was tho defeat of Airs Johnson (Christchurch), and G. Caughley (AVollington), by Mrs Gambrill (Mnnawatu) and Colonel Hume (Nelson), 26-0. The latter pair are comparatively new players so far as tournaments are concerned, while Mrs Caughley has held the open singles championship, and her partner was three times ladies’ champion.
