By the steamer Pangomaru, a Russian and his wife, who, after spending many years in New Zealand returned to Russian, in 1923, unino to Australia. They state that they found life in Russian impossible. Except for Communistic workers and peasants, tho Soviet rule inspired a constant sense of fear. It completely upset family customs, and destroyed the sanctity of home. Marriage was a farce. For 8s a couple could be married, and for n similar sum divorced after living together for a few months. Any offspring of such a marriage was looked after by the State, the father paying » maintenance allowance. Passports wore issued to certified Communists only. Religion was not now allowed to be taught in tho schools, and every effort was being made to destroy the influence of the priests. Very many had died of starvation, and ns a result of persecution. The couple escaped over the Manchurian border, undergoing groat hardships and dangers.
