Secret of America’s Prosperity, CAPITAL CO-OPERATES WITH LABOUR. By Cable —Press Association —Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received Juno 23. 7.35 P-m-) NEW YORK, June 22. Mr J. G. Elder (Australian representative in U.S.A.) m a farewell address at the British Luncheon Ciun, said: “There are many pluses, particularly industrial, of the life ot the United States which Australia and Empire might do well closely to study, and which point to the lesson should hood. The wonderful prosperity the Americans are enjoying, js duo to their particular psychology and tno methods they have adopted m practically all their industrial activities. American industry is blessed in the possession of wonderful home or domestic market. Factories hum, furnaces blaze, and riches are wiling from the Earth for at least 144 out ot every 10S hours, and where in any other part of the world can we see such educational and welfare work being carried on amongst the workers by employers, and where docs such cooperation between Labour and Capital exist Tile American workmen now fiVruly believe that the more laboursaving machinery that is used, the better it is, not only for the employers but for. the workmen themselves. “Tlie American employer pays well and believes in the principle of payment by results. Hours, of work have been decreased, and rates of pay raised, and extraordinary as is the co-operation between the employer and the employe* in no less measure is co-operation between the various uints of each industrial activity of the nation, just as remarkable. It would almost seem as if most Americans have ho secrets in their business, and they are willing to impart their knowledge to all inquirers, whom they may consider deserving of their courtesy. There is a very clear understanding on the part of American industrial men, of the benefits to be derived individually and collectively from honest, friendly and frank co-opera-tion. Every phase of the industrial life of America seems to be standardised. and mass production has greatly cheapened the output and materially lowered overhead charges. 1 ' “The Americans detsiro to bo our friends,” added Mr Elder. “They wish to know us better. Let us respond to the open-hearted and generous hospitality of their flag. Let us get closer together, for American manhood, as T have met it and understand it, is of the quality that commands the highest respect, and is altogether worthy of the wannest response on the part of citizens of the British Empire.”
