BRITAIN’S COAL SITUATION.
Statement By Prime Minister. FACING HARD ECONOMIC CONDITIONS. By Cable —Press Association —Copyriib# Reuter’s Telegrams. (Received June 11, 7.10 p.m.) LONDON, Juno 10. In tho House of Commons, in reply to questions, the Prime Minister, Mr Stanley Baldwin, said ho regretted he was unable to dissent from the conclusion in the Coal Commission’s report, that it would need years to bring into effect all the measures of reorganisations suggested, while in the meantime, the present, hard economic conditions had to be faced. Impending disaster could only bo averted by the immediate reduction of working costs by means of lower wages or longer hours. Mr Baldwin added that he had heard no alternative proposal for meeting the immediaite situation, except that the taxpayer should resume the burden of maintaining tho coal industry.
TAINTED MONEY. SOVIET HELPS BRITISH MINERS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, June 10. In the House of Commons, Sir W. Joynson-Hicks said the Foreign Office was satisfied that the Russian Government sent the money ,to Britain for purposes of a general strike. Mr MacDonald pointed out that the strike leaders refused that money. Sir W. Joynson-Hicks continued that the money was sent to the Miners’ Federation by some very closely corelated bodies in Russia, comprising the Soviet Government, the Third International and other organisations, though he had not yet established that the Soviet Government itself directly sent the money.

As a result of the coal stoppage, coal is being discharged on the Clyde for the first time in live years, by two vessels from Antwerp, while four others are on route to the Clyde with 1000 tons each. The Trade Unions affected decided to handle the coal, which is for bunkers.
