ANZAC DAY.
HATES OF PAY. By Telegraph—Press Association ~ CHRISTCHURCH, June 3. Iwo questions concerning the payment of special overtime rates of wages to workers tor Anzac Day, which this year ictl on a Sunday, were submitted to the Arbitration Court during its recent sittings in Christchurch. The Court has now given its decision, and in each ease has held that tho workers were entitled to Sunday rates only. The applications for interpretations were made by the Inspector of Awards for tho district under the typographers’ award. The Court was asked to determine whether night-workers who worked between noon and midnight on Sunday, April 25 (Anzac Day),, were emitted to double rates of pay. The nigbtworkers covered by flic award under consideration arc in no different position than if Anzac Day were an ordinary Sunday, for award provides that they are entitled to double rates only for work done between noon on Saturday and noon on Sunday, and not for work done after noon on Sunday. Tho award itself, makes no special reference to Anzac Day. Regarding Anzac Day as it affected workers under the Christchurch gasworks employees’ award, the Court’s .udgment stated that in tho case oi' hose workers who are employed on dnzae Day, when it falls on a Sunday, the Court considers that they should bo paid special rates for Sunday or Anzac Day, whichever are the higher. The foregoing is the decision of the majority of the Court, Mr A. S. Monticth (workers’ representative) dissenting.
