GENERAL NEWS.

Yesterday morning the most severe frost of the winter was experienced. Nino degrees of frost were registered.

Quarry workers in Canterbury arc to receive an increase in wages of one penny per hour, under the new award which lias just been issued by tho Arbitration Court.

A Dunedin Press Association message Bays that the conference of Agricultural and Pastoral Association delegates, expressed the opinion that until the Royal Show is more firmly established, it should bo held alternately at Palmerston North and Christchurch.

The New Zealand .Alliance (South Canterbury Area Convention), embracing tho electorates of Qamaiu, Waitaki, Timaru, Temuka arid Ashburton held its annual conference in Wesley Hall, Timaru, yesterday. Delegates attending were representative of all leagues and councils in tho area, tho Women’s Christian Temperance Union and other allied temperance associations. The conference was addressed by the president of tho New Zealand Alliance (Mr J. I. Rovds) and the National General Secretary (Mr C. It. Edmonds). A good deal of other business was also transacted.

The King’s birthday holiday passed off very quietly so far as Timaru was concerned. All the business premises were closed, and the town was pervaded by a Sabbath calm. The chief attraction in tho sporting world was tho seven-a-side tournament which was played at Eraser Park, and in which no fewer than 72 teams competed. A number of shooting and picnic parties journeyed into the country, and in bright sunshine and bracing air spent a pleasant day.

It seems as if something in the way of a ladies’ maid is provided on one of tho private buses in Greymouth, judging by the remarks of a member of tho Timaru W'omen Citizens’ Association at their public meeting on Wednesday- evening. Tho speaker surprised the meeting by- stating that a little conductress of about 18 years of ago had made herself widely known to residents of tho West Coast town. This little lady, the speaker said, was most obliging, and had earned the respect of a.I lior customers by-tile manner in which she discharged licr duties. The bus was ahvay-s run to suit the convenience of residents, as it would be stopped outside the gate of any- home where so desired, and tho conductress, instead of calling out the name of the street, would call out “Mrs Jones,”, and so on. Airs Jones was not allowed to leave the bus while carrying a parcel, as she was immediately relieved of it by the girl, who, no matter how small it was, from a bottle of medicine to a baby-, insisted on carrying it until the passenger had safelyalighted from her bus.
