WAIMATE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)] MAGISTRATE’S COURT. The Waimate Magistrate’s Court sat yesterday morning, Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., presiding. CYCLING WITHOUT LIGHTS. Harry Doyle, who did not appear, was convicted and fined 10s, and 7s costs for cycling in Queen Street without a light. Thomas Gibson was charged with cycling in John Street without a light, and also with cycling on the footpath. Defendant, who did not appear, on the first charge was convicted and fined 10s and 9s costs, and on the second charge was ordered to pay costs 9s, and witness’s expenses 10s.

ILLEGALLY ON LICENSED PREMISES. George Gillespie and Douglas Howe were charged with being on licensed premises during hours when such premises, should be closed. '■> , ; .... Constable Smith-Palmer gave evi- , dence in support of the charges. Defendants, who did not appear; wero convicted and fined £2 and costs. UNREGISTERED TRACTION ENGINE. George Sunderland Meredith (Mr : Middleton) pleaded guilty to using an 1 unregistered traction engine, and was fined £2 and costs 7s. John Turner, driver of the engine, on a charge of driving an unregistered traction engine, was convicted and ordered to pay costs. CAR WITHOUT LIGHTS. Annie Miller was convicted and fined 10s and costs, on a charge of leaving a motor-car standing on the street at night without a light attached. WANDERING HORSE. For allowing a horse to wander on. a borough street, Myles McDonald, who pleaded not guilty, was convicted and ordered to pay costs. CIVIL CASES. Judgment for plaintiff by default [ was given in the following cases C.F.C.A., Ltd. v. W. Campbell, claim £3B 15s 2d ; and Waimate Borough Council v. R. Dickson, £2 16s 2d. William Quinn was ordered to pay Anderson anj.l Smith the sum of £ll 19s 6d forthwith, in default twelve days’ imprisonment.

M. R. J. Callan v. Horace Butcher. On a judgment summons, defendant was ordered to pay the amount of the claim, £8 9s 6d, forthwith, in default nine days’ imprisonment. WILLOWBRIDGE RIFLE CLUB. The weekly shoot of the Willowbridgo Miniature Rifle Club was held on Monday evening. The following were the highest scores off the rifle :—C. Blair, C. Hollamby 68, A. Hawke, A. Douglas, D. Wilson 67, W. Hollamby, C. Bennett, H. Havman 66, M. I-layman, R. Kingsbury, B. Richardson, F. Simpson. C. Woods 65. The shoot-off for the Duncan Button was won by C. Hollamby.

RESIGNATION. At Monday night's meeting of the Waimate High School Board of Governors a letter was received from Mr T. M. Laing, first assistant in the Secondary Department of the Waimate High School, stating that as lie was shbrtly retiring on superannuation ho was resigning his position. He thanked the Board for the. great interest it and previous Boards had taken in the school. Mr Fitch (chairman) said the Board could fittingly place on record its appreciation of Mr Laing’s* services' during the long period of years he had been at the school. This was carried unanimously. FOOTBALL. The following players will represent Southern in tho seven-a-side tournament in Timaru, on Thursday :—A. Stewart, G. Stewart, It. Voitch, F. Wilce, 11. Dash, N. Manchester, I. Smith.

Tho following will play for Athletic : —Gray, Grylls, Nelson, Dobbs, ■Meadows, Cumming, Waterreus. (Players arc requested to be at tho Post Office at 8 a.m. sharp.) RUGBY SUB-UNION. Mr G. S. Meredith presided over a full meeting of the Waimate Sub-Union on Monday night. Rev. Father Knight was apologised for. J. Woods was granted a transfer from ITuimai to Athletic. It was decided not to hold any fixtures on Thursday, .Tuno 3. It was also decided to aftw any club to use ! the grounds for practice on Juno 3, j subject to the weather conditions being i favouralde. I The secretary was instructed to send an account to the Golf Club for use of grounds for coaching. Owing to several players abusing tho pass system, it was decided to issue | to each player a ticket on paying a shilling at. the gate, tho treasurer to pay out the refund of tho ticket through the club captain.
