At the Timaru Police Court yesterday morning, before Air .[). McL'ennan, J.P., Arthur State, charged with failing to adequately maintain liis wife, was remanded to appear at Ashburton on June 4.

The Customs returns for May 1926 show an increase of £2686 Os 7d over the figures for the corresponding; month last year. The figures for May, 1926, wore £11,679 12s 4d, and for 1925 £8893 11s 9d.

As a result, of the success which marked the inaugural season of the Catholic Glee Club last year, the Club has decided to venture still further by the formation of a Choral Society. The first praetico was held in the Girls’ School Hall, and judging by the enthusiasm shown by the large number of ladies and gentlemen present, a most successful season is anticipated. The conductorsliip of the choir is in the hands of -Mr A. C. 61cine.es, who for some years prior to taking up residence in Timaru, conducted several choirs in Invercargill with marked success. Under his direction the choir should achieve excellent results.

The annual meeting of parishioners of Otaio-Bluocliifs was bed in the Parish Hall, St. Andrews, on Monday evening. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of £l2 2s Bd, and as there are several subscriptions still to come in, the financial position was considered satisfactory. Jt was reported that during the past year the parish had sustained a Joss in the death of Mrs Arden, who for many years took a keen interest- in the. work of the cliurc-h. At St. Mary’s (Otaio), a carved oak rerodos had been added to the ornaments. The belfry at St. Andrews had been strengthened, and the boundary fence oil the west s.do of the glebe had. been renewed, while a new tile-grate had been supplied to the Vicarage. The Y icar (Rev. P. Rankin) appointed Mr Herbert Elworthy as his warden, and Mr J. H. Stowed was again appointed people’s warden. r lhe following were elected to servo on the veetry:—Messrs H. 13. S. Johnstone, C. J l '. Higginson, R. B. AVilliams, A. L. Bennett, C. F. Cook, J. Armstrong, \V. Giles, K. AV. Mercer, Routledge and Milos. Votes of thanks wore passed to lay readers, organists. Sunday school teachers. Ladies’ Guild, and Sanctuary Guild. At the conclusion of the meeting, several musical items were rendered and refreshments were handed round by the ladies.
