OnH a few men stood out, and most of them were non-Unionists who had come through from the city on the chance of a job. Eight gangs were required, but only three were secured. A short conference between the shipping and Union officials was held, and the secretary of the Union (Mr J. Flood) called the men together and told them that labour must bo secured for the Coolana, and that those watorsiders who usually accepted coal work with the stevedores, Kinsey and Coy., wou'd be expected to stand out and accept the call. This had the desired effect, and' the men who had been holding back for general cargo work then stood outand were engaged.
