TOO MANY TEACHERS.
MINISTER SAYS NO. c> By Association WELLINGTON, March 16. Recently a statement was made to the effect that there was * surplus of school teachers, because too many teachers were being turned out of the Training Colleges. The question • was referred to Sir James Varr, Minister of Education, who said the surplus was more apparent than real. “At the beginning of every educational year there are young teachers who are not in employment, hut this is partly because some of them do not like country situations which are open to them. -As time goes on, however, circumstances have an effect, and halfway through the year. inst«sd of there being a surplus there is a shortage. Steps had been taken of late, the Minister added, to regulate the number of teachers each centre turns out. As it had been found that the South Island had been lar exceeding its own requirements, under the now arrangements a considerable proportion of the teachers':«pw being trained in Canterbury hail from- Hawke's Bav and Taranaki.
