General Li-Ching-Lin defeated General Kuo-min-chun’s advanced column ' near Macliang, the fighting proceeding all day. The railways around Tientsin have all been cut, and the Pcking-Tientsin motor road destroyed in several places.

Firing was heard -at Tientsin until midnight. City residents fell into a state of panic, but were afterwards reassured by the presence of Franco-Jap-ltalian troops, who 'come into the city at the special request of the city police. They, are now guarding the electric supply, water works, bridges and other important points. Not many Chinese troops are actually in Tientsin. All have been sent to Machang or Peitsang, but it is feared the defeated forces will stream towards the city and indulge in looting.
