Royal Betrothal. A cable message from Rome states that the betrothal of Princess Mafalda, of Italy, to Prince Philip, cl Hesse, is announced. Vicc-Regal. His Excellency the Governor-General (S;r Charles Fergussni), accompanied bv Ladv Fergusson, Miss Urr-Evnng, and staff, left Christehumi for V ellmgton last night. Mr Adam Hamilton was a passenger by yesterday’s second express for the south. Messrs Guv Tapley, R. Peake, and C. Braithwaito ‘'(Dunedin), are at present in Timaru.
Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., (Avon), passed through Timaru on his way to Yv annate by yesterday’s iirst express. The friends of Mr W. J. Grant will bo pleased to learn that lie _ is now convalescent after liis severe indisposition. Gapt. Hatfield, Marine Superintendent of the Canadian Government Mercantile Marine, is at present in Timaru. Capt. J. McLaclilan, who has been appointed sailing master of dredge “350” at Timaru, will take up duty here on Monday next. Mr J. Caugklcy (Director of Education) , who came to Timaru from Dunedin on Thursday, left yesterday on his return to Wellington. The Hon. Sir James Parr (Minister of Education and Postmaster-General) arrived in Timaru from Dunedin by the first express yesterday, and left by the second express lor the north, i Mr W. F. James will join too Makura for San Francisco. He expects to return to the Dominion m Almost or September. His wife and daughter, who are at present in California, will return with lnm. At yesterday’s meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board, leave of absence from meetings- of the Board during the session of Parliament was given to Ml J. Bitckemv, M.P., and Mr Bitchenei will leave for Wellington on Vt ednesday next. . ~ 1 On the occasion of his marriage, Mr J Pyke was tho recipient of a set ot stainless table , ware and a handsome omlit-day clock from the farm °f 1 • Lewis and its employees.
