[WAIMATE TROTTING CLUB. INAUGURAL MEETING. OFFICE BEARERS. President, Mr W. E. Taylor; vice-pre-si-dents, Messrs T. Twomey nnd AL J. Corj’igaiij lion. treaturer, I\lr M. J. Corrigan ; committee, Messrs J. Cooney, W. B. Freeman, M. Gorman, r\. Gray, G. Gray, A. McPherson, G. Mitchell, J. B. Solte and Ft. Smith; judicial committee, Messrs AV. E. Taylor, T. Twomey, M. J. Dunstan; lion, timekeepers, Messrs Cooney, Bench and Twomey; surgeon, Br. 1. \\ • Wylie, M.C., M. 8.; hon. vet. surgeon, Mr G. C. Hu-yhurst; secretaiy, Mr Robt. F. Algio. Tho Waimatei Club has been registered for three or four years, but until yesterday it had not 1 eld a race meeting, owing to its inability to convince tho authorities that the district was entitled to a totalisator permit for tho encouragement of trotting. With the object of showing that AVaimato is a strong trotting centre, the officials decided to conduct a non-total-isator fixture, and the impetus given to the movement is shown by the fact that the club now has a membership roll of about 280. The fields were not large, the horses engaged being drawn, almost wholly from the AVaimate, Timaru and Oamaru districts, and the fixture very naturally was not so liberally patronised and lacked some of the public enthusiasm usually associated with totalisator meetings, but a .more enthusiastic band of officials than President W. E. Taylor and his committee, could hardly be imagined; and it is fairly safe "to say that had a similar meeting been held a couple of seasons ago, the club now would bo firmly established as the holder of a license to use the machine. The officials, nearly all of whom acted in an honorary capacity, included Mr A. Bickson (judge), and Mr C. Graham (making his debut as a starter), and Mr H. Davey (chief stipendiary steward), supervised, tho racing as representative of the Trotting ‘Conference. The principal winner of - the meeting was Mr B. Rodgers (Georgetown), in whose colours Fireman won a double, including tho Cup, and Patard accounted for the chief event for unhoppled horses. Both were trained by W. Spence (Waimataitai), and steered by T. Wallis (Washdyke). At tho conclusion of the race for tho Cup, the president (Mr W. E. Taylor) in a characteristic speech, expressed his pleasure at seeing such a largo attendance at a non-totalisator meeting, which, in order to get a permit, the Waimate Club had come forward in running. On behalf of tho Club he wished to thank the St. John Ambulance officials for their attendance; the Racing Club for the use of their course, and others who had given their

services gratis. Although the committee were allowed a fortnight- in which to pay out the stakes, lie felt they should be paid out immediately, and be hoped members would pay their subscriptions promptly. A word of thanks was duo to the visitors and especially the honorary officials, by coming to Waimate, had materially assisted the c-lub. Mr Taylor added that ho hoped tire Conference officials present would put in a good word for 'Waimate’s inaugural mee ting so that a permit would ed be forthcoming next year. The president offered the- club’s congratulations to the winning owner (Mr B. Rodgers) and lie asked Mrs Taylor to hand over the trophy to Mr W. Spence (trainer), who briefly responded on behalf of Mr Rodgers. A field of half-a-dozen, all on the limit, lined up for the Trial Handicap. King’s Own declined to strike a gait, and Medallion Boy also began very indifferently. The American mare Princess Ann took charge from Master Bell, and at tho mile post this pair were a hundred yards ahead of Pretty Pointer and Vican. Turning, into the back Princess Ann was eight lengths in front of Master Bell, Pretty Pointer being a furlong away, with Vican next. The positions were nos changed until the finish, Princess Ann winning easily by three lengths from Master Bell. Pretty Pointer was third, 'easing up, half a length in front of Vican. Tho winner left the mark in irreproachable. fashion, and it is possible that the high-priced imported mare may yet make amends for past failures at the post.

Tliero was only tlirce runners for tlie Kurow Handicap, for unhonpled trotters. Both Syndicate and Patard went off at a tangle, but they soon made np lost ground, and at the end of half a mile Syndicate overhauled tho leader Trilson, Patard then being 150 yards awav. Going up the hack all three made mistakes. Patard passed Trilson at ihe bend, but despite another break on the part of Syndicate, tire backmarker could not reach him, Syndicate winning by about a dozen lengths, with Trdcon half a furlong behind Patard. When the start was effected for the Cop, Ruby Carbine hobbled, and after going six furlongs tire Oamaru mam was pulled up. Nelson O’Neill led off from Fireman and Generator, hilt at the end of a furlong, tho leader left bis feet, leaving Fireman in charge from Generator. At the mile, peg Fireman. wa.s three lengths in advance of Generator, who in turn was 20 lengths in front of Nelson O'Neill, Pointaleua being 100 yards further away. Racing for the bend Fireman drew away from Generator, and turned for home with the race well in hand, .i-veintually winning by 50 yards from Pointaleua, who caught Genera to’- in the last few strides and secured second money by a neck. Cromstall and Nelson O’Neill were twontv lengths further pack. Self-Reliance compounded very early in tho Morven Handicap, leaving the, race to the remaining three starters. Medallion Boy this time began smartly and led for six furlongs from Kossolian, with Kate Thorne gradually making up her ground. The trio wore hunched half a mile from home, but Kossolian cracked up at tho bend, and Kate Thorpe had no difficulty in disposing of Medallion Boy, the back-marker winning nicely by four lengths, with TCossolian ten lengths behind the second home. Tho Ladies’ Bracelet for amateur d'-ivers, produced tho bo-t contest of tho day. King’s Own. who did not appear to have much knowledge of the business, again dropped out at. thestart, from which Master Bell and Basswood made play. At the stand thov wore 50 yards pi advance of Rubv Carbine, but half a mile from home the Oamaru marc had supplanted Gasswood. and when she took charge a furlong further on. the race looked to he oyor. Tn the straight, however, Master 801 l came again, and in a fighting finish tho "Wnihao "Downs gelding wore tho rnr.ro down, and boat her bv nearly a length. Gassvood maintained third r.lace until the last, few strides, whore he was caught and beaten by a head fog third place bv Generator. The win was a highly popular one. Mrsior Bell and. his veteran driver, who registered his first win after many attempts, rc-gi'-'R; an ovation. Tim two-mil” trotters’ race, the Mrkdr'hi Handicap, wa.s not, an exeitinr- affair. T l -” four horses on tho liur’t each made one or more mistakes in Fie first half mile, and at ihe end of six furl ones Patard. who had conceded 20 soon-mis. bad run info second place behind. Pen T-gvii. T-d' : ng charge, at the mile, fbe 'VV.ashdvke home fretted along at In's oasn. and won hr twelve or fifteen lengths from Bon

Tapui, who beat Trilson by a hundred yards. Satin Billon was another 50 yards away. Tho biggest field of tho day was saddled up for the Waihao Handicap. Self-Reliance refused to pace, and Choubra gavo a good exhibition of galloping. Vican made play from Master Bell, but at the five furlongs peg Ruby Carbine v< < showing tho w*y to Princess Ann, Fireman and Master Bell, this trio being in line. Turning for home Fireman went to the front, and led into tho straight from Ruby Carbine and Princess Ann. Giving nothing else a chance, Fireman won by a dozen lengths from Irish AVhispers, who came with a breeze in the last furlong and beat Princess Ann on the post for second money. Master Bell was fourth. In this race Fireman and Princess Ann wore penalised 24 yards, and Master Bell 12. Results were as follows: — TRIAL HANDICAP, of 30 sovs; 1) miles.
