(From Our Own Correspondent.) BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of tho Temuka Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening. Present —Tho [Mayor (Mr G. B. Cartwright), Councillors T. Gun- ! nion, B. Mclnne3, E. Booth, A. W. j Buzan, A. H. Eenn, J. S. Lee, B. White, and J. B. Sinclair. An apology I was received from Councillor AY. F. Evans. Tho Mayor made fitting reference to the- deaths of the late Mr A. Bissett, Mr E. F. O’Neill, and Mr J. Harrison, and it was agreed to send letters of sympathy to relatives. [Motions of condolence were canned, members stand ing in respectful silence. MAYOR’S STATEMENT. Tho Mayor stated that he had attended a preliminary meeting regarding heavy motor traffic. Representatives from Ashburton to Oamaru were present, and a number of resolutions were passed. Tt was also agreed to meet again in January to allocate- the money. It had been suggested that .iL-i, Gc’-iVUnc, and Timnru combine ns a district, with an inspector in Timaru. Tt was estimated that there would bo about £IO,OOO to distribute in tbo South Canterbury district. He had also attended a meeting of 1 lie Durmdiir Exhibition Executive to eb'seuss the matter of exhibits, and a,delegation of three- was appointed to go to Christchurch to attend a meeting there. A conference had also been held between roo-resentativos of tbo Com cil. the W.C.T.T.T.. Blanket Society. and Library, and the meeting would have good results, CORRESPONDENCE. Major Tnglis, officer commanding tho Ist Battalion of the Canterbury Regimeut, thanked the Flavor and Councillors for the practical interest shown towards the officers and men of tho regiment, whilst they attended a course of instruction in the town. The Mayor said that tho men had behaved themselves in an excellent, manner, and were a credit to tho regiment. A request was read from the Prime Minister’s offico ihat contributions be called for a national memorial to tho late Prime Minister. Councillor Booth moved that, a subscription list be opened in the Borough office, and that the- ohiect. bo advertised. This motion was carried, and Councillor 1 AVhito suggested organising a- shilling fund which, he considered, would be more popular and raise more money. Tbo Mavor said that Councillor AVhito was just too late with the suggestion, which", however, could be put into practice if the other method did not, have satisfactory results. The secretary of the AMluntecr Fire Brigado wrote aonb’ing for the usual annual grant, and the sum of £3O was voted. Tb" Municipal Brass Baud a.onlied for the Council’s promised donation of £ls. It woo pointed out that the conditions attached to the promise were that tlie Band give fifteen concerts during, tho season, and it was agreed to ask the Band to give the dates on which these concerts ..-had been given. Tho Department of Internal Affairs wrote asking, for a description of Temuka and district for insertion in an advertising booklet..—The matter was referred to the Business Mens’ Association.

The- District Engineer, Dunedin, wrote granting the Council permission to investigate the ballast pit near Orari, in order to test quantity of water. The residents in River Road applied for connections with the high pressure water supply. r\ ......TMVt'nro'? s"id that until something definite was done in regard to the new water supply scheme not n single connection should be supplied outside- the borough boundary. The pressure- was very low in tho summer time.

(AonuciUor Sinclair said that there was an abundant supply if all the leaks wore seen to and the water stepped. He- considered that the -water was the Council’s best paying asset. Councillor Booth opposed supplying outsiders, on the grounds that while those Jiving outside tbo borough boundary enioved all the privileges of the town, there would bo no hope- of ever extending tho borough boundary. On the motion of Councillor pluolair the matter was referred to the [Mayor, cud Councillors Evans, McTnnes and Gunnion to report to next- meeting. I FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that the paysheet of the- district fund | account amounted to £279 8s 9d, and cf the No. 8 loan account £320 3s Gd. Tho amount collected during the month was £IOO 19s, and the credit balance of tho general account stood at £733 10s Sd —Tho report was adopted. It was decided to make a rebate of 24 per cent, on rates paid before August 3rd. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee reported that after inspecting the borough, they > wished to make the following recommendations :—That the footpath on tho north side of Even Road, from King Street to Alinatt Street, be kerbed and channelled. That the concrete and asphalt work be discontinued, pending more suitable weather. That the men bo employed reforming Godley Street, and tbo soil bo used in filling up where necessary in Alluatt Street. That the Electric Power Board bo requested to paint white 6ft high, the polos on the corners of the streets. That the Postal and Telegraph [Department he requested to paint white, 6ft high, the- telephone poles on the [Main South Road, within tbo borough boundary. That the Countv Engineer bo requested to ask tbo Postal and Telegraph Department I to paint white, Cft high, all new polos voeon+lv eroded between the borough boundary and the Tcrnnkn traffic bridge i —Tho report was adopted.

RESERVES AND LTGHTING. This Committee reported on a visit of inspection to the various town reserves. They also suggested, with regard to the children’s proposed playground in King Street, that all old posts and wire fence ho renewed, that new concrete posts be made in the ’ men’s spare time ; such posts to have i a hole a few inches from the toil, to j allow cable of 1 or 5 twisted No. 8 ; wire to go through, and Mr Cartwright would plough, level, get ready, and so;v , down, if the Council supplies the grass seed. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The overseer reported on the work done by the- staff during the month. He also stated that ho had lot a contract for cleaning out the water rnco on. "Winchester Road, at 3 s per chain. Four tenders were received for the delivery of .11500 yards of shingle, and that of J. Leonaivl. at 3s 3d per cubic vard, was accented. GENERAL. Tho Mayor said that tho taxi-drivers were quite satisfied with their new stand, and thov desired the ’phone to bo- removed —lt wa.s agreed to have this done, the Council to pay tho cost. The Mavnr detailed what took place at the combined meeting in connection with the proposed library, rest room, and Plnnket room, and staled that ho was’ sure good results would he forthcoming. Ho estimated that- after tlm> canvass they would still be LI 000 short of the rcouired sum. A suggestion that the Borough should mmveinaliso fbe building was r>ut forward, and would be further discussed at a [later meeting. ,

DOMAIN BOARD. Mr G. F. McGarva’s offer to lease a reserve in Gammack Street was accepted. The Curator (Mr J. McDonald)' reported on the work done by tlio staff during tlio month. Tho chairman of the Visiting Committee (Mr. T. Gunnion) stated that arrangements had been made with tho Tennis and Croquet Clubs to do the necessary tarring and levelling. Tlio bad weather had prevented the work from being gono on with in the meantime. Regarding the small bird nuisance. in the grand stand, tho only method to deal with tins was to put a fine wire sedeen around the roof. The material alone would cost £2O. Something would have to he done. It was agreed that the overseer make an estimate to completo tho jnb. The paysheet amounting to £36 10s lOd, was passed for payment. CEMETERY TRUSTEES. The caretaker (Mr Double) reported on tho work done in the grounds. Ho also stated that an offer of £lO had been made for a pinus insignis tree.

Councillor Sinclair (chairman of tho Visiting Committee) said that he was rot in favour of removing any trees ether than were necessary. Councillor Gunnion was of the same opinion. and tho matter was left with the Visiting Committee. GOLF CLUB. An eclectic match was played on the links last Saturday, and resulted in a win for Miss R. Smart. The best scores were: —Miss R. Smart 51 18) 43: Miss Scrimshaw 49 (5) 44; Miss Taylor 51 (6) 45: Miss Twomey 52 (7) 45; Miss Guild 51 (5) 46; Miss Paterson 51 (5) 46. A mfcdal round will be played on Saturday next. The following is the draw: —Miss Paterson v. Miss E. Bremnor: Mrs Austin v. Mrs Marshall; Miss Guild v. Miss Twomey: Mrs Stephens v. Mins Hughes; Miss R. Smart v. Mrs W. Pcarse, Mrs Cartwright v. Miss M. Twentvman; Mrs Grant v. Miss Ta-vlor; Miss E. Warning v. Mrs Smart; Miss Bremnor v. Miss Manson. A men's, match, the best 9 of IS boles, handicap stroke competition, was played on the links last Saturday, and resulted in a win for V\ Carpenter. The following cards with net scores were handed in :— Carpenter 33, Stephen 34, Franklin 35, Hughes 361, W. Pcarse 37, R. Edwards 38, R. Poarso 33U R. Sm-'th 39. McLeod 40, T. Edwards- 41}, Cartwright 42, Malcolm 48.

TECHNICAL SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the Board of Managers of tho Temuka Technical School was held on Tuesday evening, there being present—Messrs G. B. Cartwright, F. Sanders, M. IT. McLeod, and J. T. Smart (director). It was agreed to place on record the splendid services rendered to the Dominion and to the Empire by tho late Prime Minister. It was agreed to write congratulating Hon. J. G. Coates on his appointment to the office of Prime Minister. The chairman reported that since the lifting of the Departmental restrictions, several classes had been formed, and they wore working very well indeed. Thcv included wool-cessing, with 16 pupils; buildings construction for builders’ apprentices, 6 pupils; carpentry, 10 pupils; typewriting and shorthand for juniors. 22 pupils. A. class in millinery would bo opened in . the course of a week or two. He also said that it wns pleasing- to be able to report that Mr H. F. Harte’s health J still permitted him to take charge of the Tomuka wool class, and the managers and pupils appreciated tho interest he took in their studies. Th:s year, wool for the class was valued at £4O 6s fid, which was bought from the National Mortgago Agency. Mr Roberts had an enthusiastic class of young men in both the budding construction and carpentry classes. It was really splendid drawing that was done by the pupils of this class. Exemption from drill to allow pupils to attend the class was readily granted by the Defence Department, and exemption in the ease of other classes was also obtained. The new regulations relating to apprentices was a step in tho right direction, and should be carefully read by both employers and apprentices. In Miss Goodman, tho Board have, a thoroughly painstaking and enthusiastic teacher of commercial work, and every pupil is bound to make progress. Tbo chairman stated that ho was pleased to bo able to report that the Director had been aldo to arrange for typewriting for the High School pupils, and so avoid the. waste of time entailed hr train travel. Mrs V. .T. Cartwright had been good onoun-li to undertake the work of teaching this division, and as she is an exnericneccl teacher, the class should make rapid progress. The Department this year brought into force_ a new regulation relating to the paving over of subsidy on voluntary contributions. Tt will not sanction the paying over of anv monev unless the Board states specially what the money is wanted for.
