O’Shea) in Die King’s Plate at Brisbane, was ridden by G. Young. Owing to the Motukarara track being unlit for racing as a result of recent bad weather, it is understood that tho Banks Peninsula Brackeniiold meeting on Saturday, will be held at Riccarton.
Tho New Zealand-bred filly Los Gatos (by Absurd—Los Vegas) topped the list among the two-year-olds that raced in Australia this season, with a total of £7876. Manifred (by Valais—Otford) follows in second placo With £5292. Poetaster (by Absurd—Lallah Rookh) is third with £4483. In recent years, says a Wellington writer, Palmerston North has decJmpd greatly as a racing centre, which is a great surprise, for its tracks are very up-to-date, and, in addition, its geographical position gives it extraordinary advantages over other towns. However. for one reason and another, owners have gone out of the game, and the result is that the town is no longer the important centre that it was.
Replying to a deputation from the I Waikato Hunt Club, the Hon. R. F. Bollard (Minister of Internal Affairs) said the only legislation he proposed to bring down next session affecting racing was to relieve some of the smaller racing clubs, making tlie Government totalisator levies 11 per cent, instead of per cent, on the first £20,000. The money thus accruing to these clubs would be required to be spent on improvements and not on stakes. The legislation would be embodied in the Finance Bill. The Prime Minister had approved of this course. The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club has decided to revert to week-end racing next season with a view to getting increased support, from Napier, which has the half-holidav on Saturdays. In former years Hastings alwavs raced on Friday and Saturday, and to fit in with the local half-holiday, a change was' made to Wednesday and Thursday, and it proved anything but a success. On the second da.v of the Dunedin Jockev Club’s meeting an attendant reported that he had seen J. Malone, owner-trainer of Aurore, give the horse a drink from a bottle prior to the steeplechase. The trainer -was summoned before the stewards, and the bottle, which he produced, was impounded. in order that the contents might be analysed. At a subsequent' meeting of the committee, it was reported that an analysis disclosed tin: presence of no. drug hi the mixture, and it was decided that the owner be exonerated.
