WINCHESTER.
GRIEVANCES VENTILATED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of residents was held on Tuesday evening. Mr L. Jtl. Orbeil presided over a large attendance. Mr Orbeil explained that the meet--1 ing was called to protest against the . Minister of Railways deleting Winchester as a stopping place for express trains, and also to object to the action of the Geraldine County Council in refusing four street lights. The residents felt that they had not had fair play from some of the members of the Council. Mr R. Maddrcn said, in regard to the express not stopping at Winchester, it meant that passengers going to Christchurch would have to go to Orari by the 2.30 p.m. train, and have a wait for two hours for the express. Mr T. 11. Langford said they would have tlio support of the Commercial Travellers’ Association in their protest. Messrs J. Ci South, J. Rcßenzy, J. L. Bennett, and C. A. Opio also entered a protest against the exclusion of ’Winchester from the list of stopping places. On the motion of Messrs Maddren and Bennett, the following resolution was passed: “That this meeting of residents of AVinchester slronglv resents the action of the Minister of Railways in deleting AVinchester as a slopping place for the 12.20 p.m. Christchureh-Dunodin express and Iho 8 a.m. Duncdin-Christchiirch express, and respectfully requests that the Minister of Railways should at oneo issue instructions to retain AVinchester as ■ a stopping place for, the trains mentioned.” Air Maddrcn moved and it was carried, that the above resolution be sent the Manistor of Railways, and that a deputation wait on Ah’ T. I). Burnett, Ai.P.. at AVinchester. Afessrs L. H. Orbeil, R. Afaddren. and T. IT. Langford were appointed the deputation to wait on Afr Burnett. Afr Orbeil mentioned that a. deputation from AVinchester had waited on the Geraldine County Council in regard to street lighting, hut the Council bad turned the proposal down.
Air .7. (1. South said they should send another deputation to wait on the Council. He it id he knew of many places where county councils had installed lights in small townships for street lighting. Afr Maddren stated that there was more traflic probably going through Winchester than Geraldine. Traffic from Hilton, Orari, Geraldine, Tomuka, and Timaru nil went through the township. The chairman of the Geraldine County Council had told him they would get lights for the main street, and when the deputation went to the meeting they were met with a refusal. On the motion of Afessrs South and Bennett the following residents were elected a deputation to wait on the Geraldine C'oiuilv Council again at t.he.'r next nicotine .---Afessrs 1,. 11. Orbeil, R.
