Crowds demonstrated outside ti:o hotel, and the manager pc shed to Earl Balfour’s room, closed the shutters and turned off the lights. The crowd hurled stones at the balcony, hitting the dragoman. The police force drove back the demonstrators front the hotel to the square opposite, where fiery speeches were delivered. Several demonstrators were arrested, and quiet was restored fay evening, numerous p. lice remaining in the vicinity of the hotel all night. The morning was quiet, but iho bazaars closed in anticipation of a big demonstration. Earl Bplfour remained at the hotel. At the conclusion of prayers ,in connection with the Ramadan festival, a crowd of 6000 marched in tho direction of Earl Balfour’s hotel. The Syrian gendarmes and police,, who attempted to stop tho demonstrators, . were attacked with stones. "A fight ensued in which the Saphis participated. Two people were killed and seven gendarmes injured. One Saphi officer and three men were.: injured. Disturbances also occurred in the Joy iJi quarter.
