Lightning Strike in London.
HOLD-UP IN DEFIANCE OF
UNION.
By Cable—Press Association —Copyrifht. Australian anl N.Z. Cable Association LONDON, Nov. 10.
A iiglitning strike occurred this morning at the London Dock cold storage warehouse. The strike spread rapidly, and all the riverside cold storage workers are idle. An official of the Union Cold Storage Company said .the trouble was due to some men objecting to the employers’ right to employ whom they pleased. Certain workers thought they had a prior claim to those engaged. No employer could tolerate this. Vital principles were at stake.
After a meeting of the storage section of the Transport Union, Mr Thompson, the Docks group secretary, said the strike was due to the refusal to employ one of the most active members of the Transport Union, -which the men regarded as victimisation. The men would remain out until a satisfactory settlement was reached. Meanwhile the matter would be submitted to the Executive of the Transport Union. The strike has not yet appreciably affected Smithfield, hut as all Union Cold Storage i
are out, those relying on the company will be without supplies immediately the Smithfield and London market meat supplies are exhausted. Covent Garden is affected, inasmuch as some foreign fruit is held by this company. The strike is unofficial. The Transport Union is inquiring intq the matter.
