John Edward Jeffreys, ageH 31, a *liingie Cartage 'contractor, of Southfcrqoki Was found guilty of attempted . murder of his;wife tit Glentui op July 27th, anj was yemanded for sentence till to-nmi'icny. Accused, his brother and twp Maoris, accompanied .by Mrs Jeffreys and two children, went pig shooting at Gientui, fn Ashley Gorge. Th® woman and children stayed in a car hill the party returned in tha afternoon for retresliments.. Subsequently the others wept ! down a gffdyj and'. accused, his wife and a h°y walked along . the “top of a ■ cliff. Accused, it was said, disengaged the boy’s hand from ins mother’s, and pushed her over a cliff eighty feet high She suffered a broken arm and bruiseo. When interviewed by the police on August, 14th> accused said the whole trouble had arisen through domestic disagreements caused' through marrying" a woman older than himself. He then wrote but a statement in which he admitted giving her a push which sent her over the cliff. No evidence was called for the defence.
