He appears to have been not trank with the Department,’ remarked Mr Page, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, in reference to i George Bagley, manager of Young s Chemical Co., ,against whom the Health Department took proceedings lor selling' vanilla essence without exhibiting . a conspicuous printed notice describing its' composition. ■ ' It was alleged by the Department that defendant had used synthetic vanilla made from oil of cloves, or in some other way, and not ,an alcoholic extract of the vanilla bean: Defendant pleaded not guilty when the case came before tlie Court on I* l'liday, but Mr C. G. 'White intimated I this .morning that’a plea of guilty I would be entered. Counsel submitted 1 that, defendant had no intention of deJ iTaucling'his customers, and it was hath tix© object of giving them a finer and more palatable'flavouring that the fining process was used. _ A fine of £IOO and costs was imposed.
