DEER HERDS.

PROTECTION REMOVED, As a result of numerous protests from farmers as to the damage beinjv done to their properties by deer, the Government has removed protection on those animals, in certain portions of the following acclimatisation districts, in which districts deer are considered to be• most numerous r-r-Nolson, Marlborough, North, Canterbury, AVaitaki, Westland, Otago-ami Southland. This means that any person may now kill cleer within the areas in whicn protection has been i-emoved ,at any time without a license, subject. ' of course, to the consent of the owner or occupier of the property. It was, at the same time realised that the nuisance would not be overcome solely by the removal of protection and a grant of £IOOO lias, therefore, been made by the Government to. assist settlers in those districts, in tlio thinning out of the deer. This amount lias., -been divided j. amongst seven districts concerned,. a. proportion to the approximate number of deer in each district. One-third of the amount is available for the .above, acclimatisation societies at the rate of Is for every animal killed by or on 1 behalf of these;, societies in, those portions of their districts whnorein protection has. not been removed. _ The remaining two-thirds will be paid at the rate of 2s per deer tail to any person who kills deer/in the areas wherein protection has. been removed.
