SCHOOL COMMITTEE
A meeting of the Temulca District, High School Committee was held last evening. Pre3ent--Messrs P. Sanders (chairman), W. J- iCey-,, u. H. Clements, C. L. i raser, A. • E. Smith, G. Higginhottom, K Hongston, L. Cl. Scrimshaw, and A. E. Foote (hon. sec.). The Education Board wrote stating that the committee’s application for a subsidy on voluntary contributions amounting to £3O had been approved. The Board also wrote regretting, that it could not at present undertake the supply ot : kindergarten furniture lor the infant classes. The headmaster (Mr R. Malcolm) > reported that the summary showed a very satisfactory attendance for | the last month, and as the promotion { examinations were close at hand it I was very desirable that this should ] continue. The school sports were to he held on Thursday. December 13th, and the Municipal Brass Brand had kindly consented to give their services on,that..p,c.casion. Mr Por-j ter, . the assistant architect, visited j the school, and along with the chair- j man of the committee went through the school and made a note of all ' renovations required. It would be j necessary for the committee to fix' dates for the Christmas holidays, j and also to arrange the matter of i prizes and the • form the- prize-giving > should take. The headmaster ac- j knowledges! the gift of a book to the school library by Mrs J. Sullivan, and also the sum of 5s to the same fund by Mr A. Lawry. The new flagpole has been erected in its, new position in the playground, and it was certainly a great improvement on the old one. The ceremony of hoisting the flag for the first time was performed on November Bth, in ' Die presence of the Mayof (Mr Gun-j nion), together with the chairman j and several - members of. the Com- j mittae. The average attendance for the past four weeks wa3 95 per cent, out of a total roll number of 430. !
Members thought that the attendance was very satisfactory, and hoped that it would continue.
it -was decided to close the school all clay on Thursday, December 6, which has been chosen'in lieu of Anniversary Day'for-the Sunday Schools’ picnic. As the treutre was not procurable for the evening of December 110, it was agreed to hold the school concert on Monday, December 17. It was decided to invito Mr TV D. Burnett, M.P., and the Mayor (Mr T. Gnnnion)' to attend the break-up ceremony. It was decided to ask Miss Phillips and Mrs Tilbrook to judge the sowing. A hearty vote; of thanks was passed to Miss Kingston,Mrs Sullivan, Air A. Lawrv, and Mr G. L. Twentyman for thoiv donation.'! to the school libraiy. Mr Fraser and Air Malcolm each gave a dux medal, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded them. The ’visitors (Messrs .Foote and Higinbottoin) reported on a visit they bad paid to the school. | On the motion of the chairman a | heraty vote of thanks -was passed to Mr John Cooper for painting the flagpole and part of lbs school fonco gratuitously.' Messrs Clements and Higinbottoin were appointed visitors for the ensuing month.
'The headmaster detailed the sports programme which will be held on Thursday, December 13, and the meeting terminated. Regarding the Christmas holidays n discussion arose regarding the reported action of the Board in fixing the reopening date as January 29. It was mentioned that no official notice had been received from the Board, and it j was agreed to close on Thursday, Be- | eember 20, and to re-open on the first , Monday in February. 1 ’ •• ' PLUNKET SHOP, A GREAT SUCCESS; 1 ' “ I Tiio Temuka sub-branch of ! the i Plunket Sooiety held its annual one- I day shop in the section between the premises id' Messrs T. J. Hughes, 1 draper, and F. A. Jovnt, which was kindly lent for the occasion' by Mr James Crombie, the sewing and needlework being placed in Mr A. H. Fenn’s establishment, where it was displayed to advantage. 'Hie venture was under the management of Mrs G. W. Armitage (president of the branch), Mrs A. Hayhursb (acting treasurer), Miss Hancox (secretary), Mrs Twentyinau, Mrs Gapper, Plunltet Nurse Cameron, Plunket Nurse Hight, M rs;. George Thomson, Mrs Gunnion, Mrs U. Austin, Mrs J, South, and Mrs Hancox. Miss Muir, and Mesdames D. Taylor and Wilson rendered valuable service in the sale of flowers. The shop was well stocked with cakes, butter, cream, eggs, ham, ; flowers, e tc., and there was j a continuous stream of customers, so ; much so that when everything was sold j the takings totalled £95. £4O wa’s also ‘ collected in donations, mailing a total of £135.' Several;, competitions were held in conjunction with the shop, and these resulted as follows (the donors' of the prizes being, in parentheses) : I Cushion, Mrs Harr (Mrs Cross); table j runner, Mr George Amor (Mrs Twenty- i man); iced cake, Miss Elder (Mrs A.J L. Barker) ; leather elephant. Miss H. Thomson (Mr Gordon Hancox) ; -beaded bag, Mrs Wightman ' (Mrs Gappor) ; bag, Afr Chisholm (Mi* Hayhurst): cake, Plunket Nurse Hight (Mrs Torepe). The day was easily the most successful held by the branch, and if i clearly demonstrated that the work of j the Plunket Nurses is apureeiated. j The' Society is indebted to the donorof the goods, and also to those whr in any way assisted in making the effort so successful.

There will also he music ancl amusement for everyone. In the evening the crowning ceremony will take place in tlis Theatre, and the St. .Peter’s Comedy Company will be seen in “Some Show.” Full particulars are advertised on the front pttge.
