A deputation of Master Builders asked Mr Chapman to remove the duty on slates, as the extra cost of tiles, sincei the formation of the tile combine, was responsible for a considerable increase in the cost of houses. Mr Chapman promised to refer tha request to the Tariff Board, adding that if the Board was satisfied that the combine was acting on restraint of trade, the duty would be reduced.
