BIRTHDAY HONOURS.
One of the most pleasing features of the Honours List, which we publish to-day is the bestowing- of a C.M.G-. on Mr J. W. Tibbs, ex-headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, one of the greatest schools in the Dominion.
Months ago wo urged that the educationist should not be left out v'hen it came to tangible marks of appreciation from a State which, in the past, has been inordinately fond of honouring' politicians and money kings.
Education means more- to the nation than either money or politics, and the light type of teacher is one of the greatest assets the community can possess. Wo suggest that both Miff. lh Firth (ex-headmaster of Wellington College), and Mr Tibbs, as men of learning and teachers of the country’s best manhood, should ha, to been Knights of the realm. Possibly Mr Parr is not anxious to break away from convention. Titles of that sort for such men would raise the status of all titles, of which some are undoubtedly empty.
