ENFORCING PROHIBITION
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSN.—COPYRIGHT (Received Midnight, May 28.) Washington, May 28. The United States Treasury officials who enforce prohibition will attempt to reconcile the ship ruling with the contentions of the five Powers. ’ The Government intends to temper the strictness of the Supreme Court’s constructions in the interest of the ebihity of the nations. The Treasury is willing to construe the ruling as liberally as possible, yet legally and safely. It is understood that an attempt may be made to safeguard the interests of those nations whose laws provide for alcoholic beverages as ships’ crews rations by permitting such under the heading of medicinal stores. The matter is so complicated that the regulation which the Treasury hoped to promulgate on June 10 maybe delayed for a considerably longer time.
A petition of 48 prominent Americans including five State Governors was forwarded to President Harding, urging the release of all persons serving prison sentences for political offences committed during the War. The petition points out that the belief is prevalent that the United States should not stoop to methods of Old World despotism in suppressing free speech.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
