• Mr D. F. Wilber, Consul-General for the United States of America, leaves Wellington on his return to America on April 20. Owing to the serious illness of his eldest son, Mr Walter Massey, the Prime Minister has been detained at Auckland. Mr 0. V. Bern- has received word that lie has passed a section of his II.A. degree and has been appointed first assistant at the Fairlie School. Mr D. A. Aitken, general manager, of the Union Steam Ship Company, was a passenger to Sydney by the' Maunganui on Saturday. 1 Mr E. Cameron, of Christchurch, Canterbury President of the Druids' Lodge, came to Timarn on Tuesday and left for Dunedin yesterday. Mr H. Pring, district president of the same Lodge, also left for Dunedin yesterday.' At the conclusion of the business at last night’s meeting of the committee of'the Timaru Trotting Club there was a pleasant little function, when Mr John Hole, the popular President of the Club, was presented with an, artistically fashioned silver cigarette case, and a gold-mounted cigarette holder, on the occasion of liis birthday. Mr' H. F. Morton, vice-President of the Club, made the presentation, speaking in felicitous terms, and wishing M, Hole many happy returns of the day, Other members spoke in similar strain, and the hope was unanimously* expressed that Mr Hole would live long to 'direct the affairs of the Timaru Trotting Club. The health of tlit guest was enthusiastically drunk, and Mr. Hole made a * happy acknowledge, ment of the compliment paid him. / i
