BY-LAW CONDEMNED.
MOTORIST’S OUTBURST.
Hard words were used concerning one phase of the municipal government of Christchurch City at the meeting of the Council of the South Canterbury Automobile Association last evening. The indignation was aroused during the discussion on a letter which' was received from a firm of solicitors in Christchurch in reference to the prosecution in Christchurch of a Timaru motorist —Mr G. W r ebster —who had been fined for having driven his car in Christchurch on a Timaru license, . The letter stated that the Christchurch City by-law allowed a motorist to drive through the city once without a license. In the case referred to the defendant had been fined 10s and costs (£1 18s). The South Island Motor Union also wrote in regard to this case. Ibis was a matter, the Union said, that should bo dealt with in a Motor Bill, and until that was done anomalies would continue to exist and cause hardship to motorists. The matter would be placed before the first meeting of the Canterbury members of Parliament, and the Minister for Internal Affairs would also bo communicated with, in order to sDeed up a new Motor Bill to cover everything which affected motorists m the matter of traffic regulation etc. “Is Christchurch being ruled by a lot of Germans? Better take the Christchurch City Fatliers and put them in tho Avon.” So said Mr Orhell when the correspondence in connection with this prosecution was read. _ Considerable indignation was expressed that motorists should ho persecuted in this way, and a by-law which provided that a visiting motorist to Christchurch should he compelled to take out' a license if ho drove through the city more than once was characterised as the height of absurdity. _ „ .. It was decided to write to the Ghnstchurcli City Council protesting against the by-law'referred to. It was also decided to urge, tho early passing of a now Act governing motor traffic, in order to put an end to all anomalies.
