THE MAYORALTY.

QUEST FOR CANDIDATES.

MR CRAIGIE’S POSITION

Considerable interest is now being shown in the next Mayoral election for Timaru, and there is a strong feeling in favour of asking.Mr J. CrjugiD to again consent to nomination. I here ia a proposal to form a representative deputation of citizens to wait on him, and emphasise the requests which individual citizens have already made. Last evening a representative ol tfte “Herald” waited upon Mr Oraigie to ascertain his feelings’ on the matter. Mr Craigie said he took it as an honour to be asked, as he ha!d been, to again contest the Mayoralty, and he appreciated the compliment which so many of his fellow citizens had pavd him. But the position was that he had been in public life m South Canterbury for the past 21 years, for ten of which he had been Mayor of the town: he was getting up in years now and he felt a desire for a little leisure. Moreover, he was desirous of taking an extended trip to the Old Land; and while he would always endeavour tp do what he could for Timaru and South Canterbury, he did not feel that he could again take on the high office ot Mayor l of Timaru. It had come to hia knowledge that a deputation intended to wait upon him on the matter, and he hoped that they would accept this intimation of his inability to comply with their request. . . It has been suggested m several quarters that Mr J. P. Murphy should be invited to become a candidate for the Mayoralty. .
