PERSONAL.

The Hon. W. Downie-Stewart, Minister of Customs, came by train from the north yesterday to Timaru, and spent last night at Fairlie. The Minister is accompanied by his private secretary (Mr L. E. Johnson), and will leave Timaru by the first express to-day for Palmerston South and Naseby.

Detective Abbott, Timaru, is at present on annual leave/ Captain C. P. Rogers, a South. African War veteran, died suddenly at New Plymouth on Monday morning.

Mr J. T. Smart, of the staff of the Temuka District High School, who has been on a visit to Christchurch, returned to Temuka yesterday. Dr J. C. Bradshaw, organist at the Christchurch Cathedral, who has been on an extended trip to England, has returned.

Mr Barry Coney, of Auckland, has been appointed judge of the vocal and instrumental sections at the Napier Easter competitions. Mr W. A. Briscoe, chairman of directors of Messrs Briscoe and Co., Ltd., is on a business visit to New Zealand, accompanied by his son, Mr R. G. Briscoe. Mr A. M- Hester, for many years accountant to the Press Co., Ltd., Christchurch, has been appointed to succeed Mr P. Selig, who has just retired, as manager.' Mr W-. T. Thompson, orchard inspector, who had been in the service of the Agricultural Department for fifteen years, dropped dead at his home, Onehunga, on Tuesday. Mr Thompson was 61 years of age.

The death ,is announced from Whangarei of Mr F. G. Radcliffe, whose scenic photography was featured in many exhibitions, and was much used in Government propaganda. The deceased was well known in musical circles, and was a member of the Christchurch Exhibition Orchestra.

Miss Lorna M. Nlcholls, who recently obtained a University scholarship, is the daughter of Mr A. J. Nicholls, of the Post Office Savings Bank, Invercargill. Miss Nicholls obtained a Junior National Scholarship at the age of 12 years, and was dux of the Waimataitai school the same year. From the Timaru Girls’ High School she matriculated with solicitors’ general knowledge and medical preliminary, gaining a Senior National Scholarship the same year. In 1921 she secured the Cain Essay prize, and in 1922 the Cain Essay jsfize and a University Scholarship, and was dux of the Timaru Girls’ High School.
