PEACE CONFERENCE.
PARTITIONING THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE. By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. . PARIS, May 18. The "Temps" denies that the Conference has actually decided to divide Turkey into several zones. The Big Four, however, have con" sidered proposals; (1) the United States receiving a mandate over Constantinople and Armenia, and (2) Greece tak- | ing the coastal region, having Smyrna as the principal centre. The third proposal provides for Italy administering southern Anatolia, and the fourth northern Anatolia, including Broussa and Angora, forming a Turkish State, whose independence France would undertake to safeguard. OCCUPATION OF SMYRNA. ROME, May 18. Considerable newspaper agitation followed the news that a Greek division had been authorised to occupy Smyrna. It is pointed out that two-thirds of the Trieste trade was with Smyrna. Italy's claims to Smyrna are apparently not recognised. Although newspapers advise calmness, they forcibly protest against Italy's claims before the Paris Conference being sacrificed to the profit of either the Jugo-Slavs or Greeks.
