Sir Donald Mac Lean, in the House of Commons urged the appointment of a Committee to inquire into the proposed capital levj r ) providing data for a decision before the next budget. He regarded the imperial preference pro7)Osals as an anaemic effort l and hoped the Chancellor would gather courage to introduce a scheme of more lasting importance to the whole Empire. T,lio South Wales Miners' Conference passed a resolution requesting members to refuse to pay income tax until the exemption is raised to £250, and urging the miners' federation to act similarly.
TRUSTS AND COMBINES. The British Ministry of Reconstruction's committee on trusts, after an investigation of tlio iron and steel industry, reports a remarkably wartime increase in trade combinations for restricting competition _ and controlling prices. Tlio committee recommends machinery similar to that of the dominions and the United States to investigate the operations of trusts anil combines.
