TARIFF REFORM.
SCHEME FOR, ITEM ALTERATIONS. (Per Press Association). ; • WELLINGTON, May 29. The Hon. A. M. Myers, speaking at the Oaamber of Commerce, said ' the question of dumping had been brought under Ins notice, as Minister cf Customs, and a elans* dealing with the matter had been drafted for submission toParliament when the opportunity arrived. The New Zealand tariff, added Mr Myers, was not sufficiently elastic to meet the rapidly changing conditions of trade and commerce. Rec'tifi cations were required in many directions, but as matters stood alterations could not satisfactorily bte made except at the time of a general revision of iXe tariff. The Government had under consideration a scheme* by which, when ifc appeared advisable that t!he> tariff oh auy article should bb filtered, the matter could be referred to an. Advisory Committee, and on tho recommendation of ■this Committee, the Minister of Customs, with the approval' of the.House of Representatives, would be able to modify the tariff in the direction deemed necessary. He believed that some such scheme would be of great advantage to tho manufacturers of New Zealand, and especially those who were establishing new industries.
