INDIA.

NEW STATUS EMPHASISED. A HINT TO DOMINIONS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. Received 5.5 p.m., May 25th. LONDON. May 23In presenting the Indian Budget in the Commons Mr Montague, Secretary for India, foreshadowed a Reform Bill to he brought down in June. He pointed out that India would be an original member of the League of Nations, and such membership would only be justifiable if India was raised to the position of a sister nation of the Empire, and was wholly inconsistent with its. present subordination. . Mr Montague added: "I say to our colleagues representing the great dominions that this position of India's equality in the League is wholly inconsistent with the treatment of India's citizens in the British dominions which'-puts them lower than citizens of other parts of «nr Empire."
