VITAL STATISTICS FOR 1916. '"The Times." LONDON, Feb. 21The Registrar-General's statistics tor 1916 show the lowest birth and death rates and almost the lowest marriage rate on record. The marriage rate of widows was the highest for thirty years. Births exceeded deaths by 277,303, including war fatalities, which is believed to be much under these figures. The German figures for the same period were births 1,103,000, deaths ,1,331,000, practically excluding war fatalities.
ARGENTINE GRAIN PURCHASED. BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 21. Details of a convention concluded between Argentina and the Allied Governments 6how that the latter will purchase surplus wheat and other cereals to the extent of two and a half million tons, to r oe exported by the Ist of November next. The maximum price of wheat is 12£ doSars per 100 kilos (220.5 lbs). Argentina opens a credit of a hundred million dollars each for the British and French Governments for the above purpose.
