Tn the Honso of Lords Lord Sellinrno said there ivjk widespread belief that, honours vp.ru sometimes granted in return for large payments of money. Tie suggested that when honours were, conferred on others than royalties or persons belonging to the naval, military and eivil ser»'ices, a pu'.-.iie statement should he made giving the reasons for such honours; a.lso that the Premier should make a, declaration iliat no payment, direct or indirect, was associated with them. Lord Curzon, in reply, said that hereditary honours had been widely diffused in our generation and their democratisation was one of the best safeguards of public life. The. cases of alleged purchase were an infinitesimal proportion. Moreover, honours wero given far less for party services than formerly. The Government was prepared tc consider the extension of the .system of publishing reasons for granting, henunrs.
Lord Salisbury denied that the evil bad boon exaggerated. The nation's conscience was awakened, and the Government should fiud a remedy.
