SPECIAL MEETING.
A'special meeting of the Timaru Borpugu oouncu w<*s kelu iast JiiguL, for duo purpose,' primarily, or conquering a claim by Mr iiay far aliegea delay on the part or the Borongu Council in taking tteiivery of broken metal from him. The claim was tor £250.
There were Mayor (Mr E. K. Guinness), Councillors Green, 'Souier, Ourne, Horveil, Maling, WalRaymond, Chiles, and Hurdley. The Mayor said* he had obtained, a legal opinion from the Council's solicitors (Messrs Perry, Perry, and Kin T nerney) on Mr Hay's claim, and he asked the Town Clerk to-read this. The letter was read as asked,, it be- ■ ing taken in committee. Mr Hay, through/an Oamaru firm of I solicitors, has served a notice on the Council claiming £250 damages. After consultation with him, Mr Hay was told that the Council could not pay out except on the certificate of their engineer, and tha'fc before consideration could be given to his claim it would be necessary for him to withdraw ' it, leaving it to' the Council to refer to their engineer the question : whether Mr Hay ought, in equity, to be paid anything more than he . has already received. Mr Hay said he would consider the matter. _ He did not wish to go ,to law if it could be avoided. It was made clear in the course of the discussion that the engineer's certificate is final., ANZAC DAY. •--'"•- The Council then considered the form of the Anzac Day celebrations. ■ The Mayor said that a letter, had been feceived from the Ministers' • Associate, who advised that they, would hold a service similar to the one which they held last year. He suggested lohat the Council should arrange to hold i gathering in the afternoon at which ; the military would be present, and i speeches suitable to the occasion be delivered. There would be no necessity for recruiting speeches this year. The_ Mayor and 'the chairmen of thecommittees of the Council were ap-' pointed a special committee to arrange the details in connection with the cele- I brations. ' * It was alro decided that the Mayor should proclaim Anzac Day as a' full holiday. The letter from the Ministers'" Association was referred to the special committee. t , ' ' •
