TEMUKA TECHNICAL SCHOOL.

MEETING OF MANAGERS, A meeting of .the managers of the Temuka Technical School was held on Tuesday evening. Present, Messrs G. B. C'artwright (chairman), P. A. Acheeoh, J. Bambridge, G. Thomson, F.. v Saunders, A. Frew, E. B. Cooper and J. T: Smart (Director). An apology was icceivea from Mr-C.-J.-Bilton. The chairman stated that the auditor'was here last week, and he had found everything/correct. A start had bi:en made with the dressmaking classes; there was a good attendance, bu't tliey would be pleased to have a few more pupils. The painting and repairing 6f woodwork.had been finished, and the school was in good order. Mr/ $• (T/j.S'ma'rt, ,the, directory ;• .read tlio report and balance sheet. The report sdD forth the personnel of the Board of Managers for 1916, ; and gave a list of the classes carried on last year —dressmaking (3), wool-classing, singing and elocution, painting and sketching, tomihercial Work, ambulance i>nd home nursing,. and. sheep'- shearing. Classes in cookery and agriculture had to ! be sltopped for want of, support. The wool-classing class was stronger than for some Tears, and the good effect of the teaching had been proved by London prices of wool classed by pupils and ex-pupils. Pupils also cariied off prizes at ithe Timaru Show. A' good stamp of young men enrolled for the shearing class and did excellent work; altogether 2150 sheep were shorn in three weeks. Mr S. McOully rind 'other farmers helped generously. The cither classes were as well supported ascould be expected. The Association had reason to be pleased with its staff and 'dip standard of instruction given. Tn all 11.6 individual students had attended the classes. Sorrow was expressed in the report aid the depth in. the war of seven promising students and ox-students. Thanks were recorded to several genltlomen who had shown a. lively interest in . the school and had assisted it in various ways; also to the slrnff for their loyalty to the school, and tolorol. bodies and private individuals for financial support. In this regard a

grant by the Temuka Road Board from th-j Hobson TrusiD was a great help, and the managers hoped that this would become au annual grant. The managers uiged tlw importance of keeping up donations and . hoped for increased grants-'from the local bodies. In concluding,' the report paid a tribulte to the- valuable help given to the Board by 'Mr Ritchiiigs Grarft, and the zeal which 'members 6'f. the Board had tittended to the interests of the school. The statement of receipts and expenditure showed a larger credit balance than for many previous lyears, this, being largely due to the Souith Canterbury Education Bo.ard making a progress capitation payment of £SO; wish-out-'tch at the school would only just, have paid its way.
