FAIRLIE NEWS.

(From ourn Own Correspondent.) THE DROUGHT BROKEN. • At last the drought has broken and the ground has received a good wetting. Rain commenced to fall on Saturday morning, and continued steadily through the day, and through Saturday night and Sunday morning. On Sunday morning the fall began to slacken off, a few showers only falling in the evening. Monday morning was dull, but the sun was trying to shine through, showing that the rain had come to an end for the time being. The rainfall is, however,, sufficient for the present. A couple of inches was registered, and it fell steadily, so that- most of it soaked into the grund and -will do. an incalculable amount of good. The fall must have been, heavier in the ranges,, , because the rivers were in fresh on' Sunday morning. . The glass is now high, so that a few fine growing days may bo expected. ; ODDFELLOWSHIP., The summoned quarterly meeting of the Gladstone Lodge, 1.0.0. F., was held last Wednesday evening. There was,/a good attendance, presided over by Bro. JLiev: H. O. Hanby, who was assisted by Bro. Hammond, Y.G. A number of cases of sickness were reported upon, and sick pay was passed as required. One candidate was elected and i one nominated. It was decided after considerable discussion that in future cases treated in the public hospital shall be allowed to claim on the medical aid fund. An appeal whs made on behalf of an old servant of the Order who has devoted his life to the furtheran.ee of Oddfellowshio, and a substantial sum was handed in, which will bo augmented considerably before the fund closes. AH members were asked to respond to the circular sent out as soon as convenient. Correspondence was read.and dealt with, and business of a routine nature was transacted The receipts for the evening totalled' £>l7.

A. AND P. SHOW. j Tlio annual' Show will be held as usual on Master Monday, on the Athletic Grounds. Entries close next Thursday, at the secretary's office, Fairlie. Owing to the dry season there is sure to be a falling off in the entries, but it is hoped that all old exhibitors will rally round and do their best for the annual exhibition in spite of the discouragements of the season. Sheep have done well during the autumn, and it is expected»that the entries in this section will be on a parity with those of former years. , There should also "be the usual good display of horses, both light and draught. The biggest falling off will probably be seen in the field roots, though it is wonderful where the roots come from even in the drv seasons. All who possess roots worth ■ showing should make a point of putting them in, so as to keep up the' reputation of this section of the show. Gramr should be well represented, as thresh, ing is well forward, and there are some ■good crops in the district. Home'products may not be so plentiful as in former years, as the ladies of the district have again undertaken to cater for the numerous patrons of the Show. However, they did this work last year, and the result-.was anything but disastrous to the cookery section. . In regard to the catering, it is a matter for congratulation that the ladies have again undertaken the task of feeding the multitude that visits Fairlie on a line Show day. They will endeavour to 'retain their reputation on this occasion A substantial sum was handed to the ptriotic funds s a result of last effort, and it is hoped that equal success will alttend the venture this season. The whole district.has been canvassed, and gifts of all sorts have been readily forthcoming. A large and staff of helpers will assist on Show day, so that there should be no delay in the serving of luncheons and light refreshments.
