THE OTAKI LOST
SUNK BY GERMAN RAIDER, A Christchurch telegram states that Mr Bennett, General Manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, has had lio word of the loss of the Otaki, reported to have been sunk by the Moewe. The vessel reached London from Australian ports about a .month ago. The latest letters received by Mr Bennett from Home dated February ?th, stated that it was intended to send the Otaki from London to Liverpool to load _for Australia and New Zealand, and it is possible that she met disaster when between these two ports. Mr Bennett cannot understand the nonreceipt of advices of the loss of the Otaki, and is cabling for an explanation of the Admiralty's report. A later telegram states: Mr Bennett received a cable message tonight, confirming the report that the Otaki has been sunk by a raider and stating that the whole ship's company are supposed to be prisoners df var in Germany. The Otaki -left Australia for London at the end of th© year and flll her cargo of frozen meat had been discharged. Mr Bennett, thinks that the Otaki was on her way 'from London to Liverpool. to load cargo for Australia and New Zealand when she met disaster. Shfl- woxf.d therefore be an emptv ship. So far as he knows, Captain Suba., who took her Home, was in command.
