The Now York "Times" London correspondent intei-viewed General Maurice, Director of Operations, who said the Germans had blown up every important cross road in the retreat and •wrought diabolical havoc with buildings. Public works were wantonly destroyed, even those not of military value. These precautions did not stop the British advance. The Germans threatened to destroy the portion of France in their hands if they are compelled to continue the retreat.

TJtB present retirement did not surprise the British, but it is impossible 1o say where the Germans will make their stand.
