ATTACKING THE GERMAN NAVY. AN AMERICAN OPINION. NEW YORK, Dec. 28. A naval export., who refuses to allow his namo to be used, opines in the New York Press that Britain will only be able to attack the German fleet by means of land armies operating from Schloswig Holstein. Once a British forco has gained a footing the fleet will be able to render great assistance. Kiel Canal once captured, the destruction of tho German fleet will be easily accomplished. Thereafter nothing could prevent Russia sonding troops through the Baltic to assist on the western front. COMMANDER OF THE YORCK. SENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT. COPENHAGEN, Dec. 28. German newspapers sate that the commander of the German armoured cruiser Yorck, which struck a chain of mines in Johdo Bay on November fi during a fog. was sentenced by tho fortress commander to one year's imprisonment for negligence in navigation and manslaughter. LUCKY ESCAPE. FROM A BOLD VENTURE. PARIS, Dec. 28. A sailor on a French submarine relates that they ontered an enemy port (unnamed) on Sunday and were about to torpedo battleships when the
rudder caught in steel cables. Tho submarine was drawn up nearly to the surface and torpedoes and shells rained on it. It was a miracle it was not struck. Suddenly the cable,yielded and the submarine dived sixteen mot res and escaped. It was submerged for twelve hours. '
