OUR TROOPS IX CAIRO. THE NATIVES IMPRESSED. "Times" and Sydnsy "Sun" Sorwlses Press Ajwociation—By Tel.—Copyright. Received 5.5 p.m., Dec. 29th. LONDON, Dec. 2S. The Australian Contingent paraded in the European and the Native quarters of Cairo on Wednesday. Men and horses were in the pink of condition for work, and extremely smart looking. Repeated expressions of admiration were heard from natives thronging the route, who were particularly impressed when the lino of troops was interrupted to permit a native funeral to pass in front, the regimental hand continuing to play "Tipperary." compliments AND ANTICIPATIONS. Press Association —By Tel. —Copyright. Received 8.30 p.m., Dec. 29th. LONDON, Dec. 29. The ''Daily Telegraph's" correspondent at Cairo says the Australians and New Zealanders are now in desert camps. Whatever they are asked to do is done seriously, in order that they may improve in efficiency and assist, by the contribution of their best energies, the Empire's work in Europe. Just as the Sydney's men showed that the King's Australian Navy could be trusted to do its part on the seas, the young Australian and New Zealand armies are thirsting to prove that the colonial soldier is a splendid" addition to the Empire's strength. Musketry they love; their battalion parade is splendid; fatigue < duty a pleasure, because it is necessary. The horsemen —and they are all iino horsemen —are hard at it, getting the animals into condition. Their horses are of a handy type. No conditions are too hard for these men. Some New Zealanders were for some time without tents and slept on the sand. When rain came the officers told them they had better make shelters. The Auckland battalion searched for pieces of timber and oat bags, and within half an hour everyone was snugly housed in whares, which doubtless will bo almost reluctantly exchanged for bell tents.
