FANCY DRESS BALL.

AT AYASHDYKE. A very successful fancy dress hallthe proceeds -of which were in'aid of the piano fund, was held in the Public Hall on September 3rd, when there was a largo attendance, a. goodly number coming from Timaru. The promoters were the members of the Hall Society, and\ they have every reason to be satisfied with the success of their efforts. During the evening a large number of entries were received for the waltzing competition. The judges were Messrs Bellette, Davie, and Williams, and their decisions were very popular. Mr T. Riddle and Miss Lynch were given a great reception on receiving first prizeAir and Mrs D. Smith were placed second, and Mr G. O'Connor and Miss E. Ross, third. The Committee also gave two prizes, one for the best fancy costume for ladies,, and one for the men. Miss R. Jackson dressed to represent AYe'-don's Crochet was awarded first prize, and Air Roy Harris, dressed as a Dutch boy, was awardeel first for the men. Others present, were: —Mrs D. Smith, as Queen of Hearts, Miss E. Mackie, Japanese Girl; Miss Dawson, Powder and Patches ; Mrs Robertson, Gipsy Queen: Miss Norrish, Weldon's Fashions; Miss E. Cooper, a newspaper; Miss Lynch, Irish Colleen; Miss Lynch, Sailor costume; Airs James, representing the Belgian and British flags; Airs Miller, Spanish peasant; Miss Cooper, Japanese Girl; Miss M. Harris, Spring: Airs Moir, Red Cross Nurse; Mrs Ivtllahan, housemaid; Airs Bigham, Powder and Patches; Roy Dawson, a Nigger: Air Bigham, Clown; Air H. Seyb. Stockman: Air Davie, Human Froti: Mr Boulder, Santa Clans: Mr Alil'cr. represented Reid and Gray; Air T Da'we, a Nigger: Air AYilliams, a Trooner. The music for the dances was supplied by Airs Ellis's band; Air R. Harris, ' Alcsdaines Aliller, Harris, antl Smith, played extras. Alessrs F. King and Boulden contributed songs. During the evening a collection was made by a Be'gian present in ad of the Be 1 g" tun Re'ief Fund, and this was liberally responded to.
