SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
WAIMATAITAI. Tile monthly meeting of the Waim.itaitai School Committee was held last night. Present Messrs H. Innes.•Tones (chairman), W*. W. King, secretary, G. K. Knowle?, W. £. Tank. If. Evans, C. East, Mrs Cray and Mrs Buchanan. An apology for absence was received from Mr Bridgewaier. The headmaster reported that tha average attendance for the past quarter had been 504 while the average roll was 570. The average for the week ended July 8 was 4-S5. Titis reduced attendance was due to the prevalence of sickness in the district. MUs Band had commenced her duties at the school, and would undoubtedly prove a valued addition to the staff." It was pieasing to note that in the Gazette just issued both Miss Byers and Miss Baird had had their teaching status raised. For the fuel fund £ls had - been contributed. He. had had si-i. historical pictures, obtained from the Board, framed, at a cost of £1 19= Although they had a large number of pictures in the school thev could easilv find space for any nioro that were available. H? had to acknowledge the part of a beautifully framed picture .rom Mr T. Bowkett. Some bugles were now available in Wellington at a •small cost. Tie would like authoritv to purchase at least three of these " ■ A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Lowkett, and another to Mr Bell (who had given half a dozen*pietures). Authority was given to purchase three bugles.
The Treasurer (Mr Knowles) reported a credit balance of £37 Is 4dAccounts, amounting to £2O 15s 6d, were passed for payment. The chairnn-n said the committee appointed had been unable so far to see Mr R. H. Rhodes in regard to purchasing from him a piece of land to tnlarge the school grounds. He suggested that a telephone should be put in at tiie school or at the master's house: it would be a great convenience and would obviate the necessity for borrowing other people's telephones.
Mrs Buchanan and Mrs Crav expressed the opinion that the "telephone should be put in at ererv school in the town.
On the motion of Mr Evans, seconded by Mr Knowles. it was decided to ask the Board of Education to nut the telephone in at the Waimataitai school. Some remarks the Tererse of complimentary were made concerning the failure of the Borough Council to redeem their promise to widen Trafalgar street, and a committee consisting of the chairman and Messrs King "and Knowles.was appointed to again wait on the Council in respect of the matter.
Mr Evans inquired whether anything had been done in regard to stationing a constable at Waimataitai. It was decided that the committee jnst named should ask the Borough Council about this matter when they wait on them in regard to the widening of Trafalgar street.
The Ixst method of enlarging the school grounds, and shifting the master's residence, and providing a. cottage for a janitor, was briefly discussed, but nothing definite was done. A lengthy discussion took place concerning the state of the latrines at the school, and it was decided to write to the Board of Education asking them, to remove these buildings to a better position.
Two fresh cases of dipiheria were reported. The headmaster said he was quite sure that the ■school was in no way responsible for the disease. Mrs Buchanan thought that in order to satisfy people they should have tho school thoroughly examined by a medical man.
In view of the present had weather it -was decided that the school should not re-openi until July 27. This concluded the business of the general committer.
A meeting of the committer appointed to arrange for the garden party was then held when various details were arraneed. Miss Eyfe was present to assist, .with this part of the business. Mr Evan? was appointed, seeretarv to the garden party committee, and the d:ite fixed for the function was October 22nd.
