BANDS CARNIVAL.
MEETING WITH ORGANISER. WHO DETAILS HIS SCHEME. The general committee of the Bands Carnival met in the Arcade Cafe last evening, when there -mas a large attendance. Mr A. M. Paterson, in.the absence of the Mayor (Mr E. 11. Guinness) presided. The chairman introduced Mr Cardston, the organiser of the proposed "Queen of the Carnival." Mr Schnack gave notice 4 iat ho would move at next meeting t'.at the Salvation Army shall participate in any surplus. Mr Cardston stated that he had an excellent meeting with the ladies' committee in the afternoon. They we) eso enthusiastic that there need bo no fear of the success of the cia.rnival. Thxi ladies suggested that the bands -ion* should have a stall, managed by their wives and friends, and the bandsmen could make lots of articles that would sell well. He recommend 3d gold nuggets as the prizes for the art v.nion. The chief money-maker would ha the election of the Queen. He suggested that one candidate should' ho got from each of the following—Territorials Snorts Clubs. Maoris, Fire f'ririgade, Friendly Societies conjoined, the Hospital, the Scottish Society, and one or two from the country. They should allow about' a fortnight for nominations. He would have about 200 children .taking part, and they could have a candidate. Each candidate should have a colour, and canvassing committees with these colours, should organise all sorts of functions to raise money for the Band fund. Voting papers should be issued in boohs to represent six votes. He suggested that the voting extend over five weeks, and the "coronation" take place on tbe first half holiday after the announcement of the result. The coronation ceremony should he a big affair, and according to Mr Cardston's description it would be highly attrac tive.
Mr Cardston was asked many questions, which ho satisfactorily an swored.
The chairman said the Scottish So* ciety had already two candidates in view, so that they had one to spare Mr Cardston suggested issuing three votes with each art union ticket, which woidd be an incentive to buy tickets.
A proposal to drop tho art union idea was voted down.
Regarding the ' carnival. Mr Cardstem said,he had over 200 costumes, his sister also assisted him, and he would also have the assistance of a pupil of iiis own, who would he only too willing to assist. (Applause.) Mr Harold Moore was added to the executive.
Mr Cardston was cordially thanked for his clear statements and valuable information.
