Mr William Evans left yesterday for Ckristehurcb, en route for the West Coast.. ■'■ Mr Duncan Neveni'lJTisiuess manager of the Misclia Elman tour, arrived in Tiraaru yesterday, to complete the- arrangements for Elrnan's concert in the Theatre Royal nest Wednesday. L ' ' : ■ -■"■■■ The. lion, secretary to the South Canterbury Ex-Contingenters' Association (Mr Thoreau) received a letter from the Hon. It. H. Rhodes yesterday accepting the position of patron of the Association. The funeral of the late Mr WalterWilliams took place on Thursday afternoon, when the cortege was followed by a large number of friends of the deceased. The ceremony at the. graveside was conducted by tlie Rev. Mr Wilson. Many wreaths were forwarded, including one from the St. Mary's Hockey Club, Timaru Fire Brigade, Smithfk'ld Gun Club and Wanganui Garrison Band, with winch bodies the sons of the late Mr Williams, are connected. The funeral of the late Mrs Burnett, of.Cave, tbok place yesterday morning, and was attended by a representative gathering of friends from far and near, the deceased lady having been widely known, and always estee.med for her sterling qualities of mind and heart. The remains were interred in . the Timaru cemetery, being conveyed from Cave by special train, which conveyed a good many country people and arrived hare at 11.30 a.m. As the proeei'sion moved off from the railway staion, it was added to by friends from Timarii and district. The ceremony at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. J. Craig, of Fairlie. On Tuesday <'voning the sii/ff? of Messrs Hutchison Bros, and Mr Ncwconie met in the Arcade Cafe to bid farewell .to an old momber i.t tie firm, Mr J. Menzies, who has liee.i v : ith the firm for the past clight years, and is leaving to take up dairy farming. Mr Menzies was presented with on p.asv t'liar'r by Mr John Hutchison on behalf of the company, and Miss White, manageress of the Arcade Cafe, who presented a silver butter dish and knife to Mrs Menzies, expressed, in suitably terms the respect they were both held in by all members of the combined staff. Mr Menzies suitably responded. A pleasant o.nd social evening was J' spent with songs, etc., winding up with a dance.
