Liberality towards religious organisations in England, does not appear to bo a small th.ng. Tho Methodists have just raised £270,000 for mission work, the Baptists received £250,000 as a sustentation fund to ensure a minimum stipend for all ministers, the Cohgregationalists subscribed another quarter of a million for a similar purpose, and about £BO,OOO as a special contribution to the London Missionary Society; and tho Church of Scotland has been engaged in collecting £180 ; 000 as a-pen-sion fund for ministers. The sudden death of the Rev. Silvester Home, M.P., was not unexpected. A year ago a London medical specialist pronounced Mr Home to be a-prematurely-old man. For years he had consistently overstrained himself, with the consequence that all vessels had hardened, throwing a strain upon tho heart that that organ was unequal to bearing. It was this staggering medical verdict (says the London "Christian World") that led Mr Home to withdraw from ■\Vhitefiekl ! s, and 'spend the summer and autumn of last year resting in Shropshire. He relinquished his ministry, though- it was his intention to resume an active pastorate, and he took his parliamentary duties more lightly than had been his custom. In March last, Mr Home, again saw a specialist, who reported more favourably hut intimated that if a general election should come this summer he,must not face the strain of the electoral contest. Just before Easter Mr and Mrs Silvester Home left England for New -York for a health trip, with which was combined, the delivery •at Yale -of the Lyinan Beeclier Lectures—on "The Romance of Preaching." On leaving Yale, Mr Home was to proceed to Canada, where he was to preach and speak for the hood Movement. En route, Mr and Mrs Home spent the d£y at Niagara Falls, and then took the Lake Ontario steamer at Lewiston- for Toronto, where Mr Horrie was due to preach next day. ! It- was on this short voyage that he had a fatal heart seizure. As tho boat entered tike harbour the capr tain found him dead in a chair. Another cable says that ho fell dead at Mrs Home's feet.
