ARBOR DAY FOR SOUTH CANTERBURY.

To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald." Sir, —I would be greatly obliged if you would insert in your next issue a notice calling tho attention of teachers, committeemen, and parents to the fact that th s year the South Canterbury Education Board has, at my suggestion, fixed August 19, as the date far the observance of A rbor Day, to take the place of July 15, the Dominion Arbor Day, in the schools of South Canterbury. This was done owing to the data oeitig more suitable for the district as a whole, and also to the fact tha; many schools are observing the r winter •.«>wu.bn at th.'s period, and arc debarred iie-n participation in a cr.mjelition to be held in connection with Arbor Dav.

It is hoped that parents wili be generous in the r contributions to provide funds in eci-h district for the buying of suitable shrubs and trees; donations in cash ar epreferred as pei-mitt.ng a better • selection of suitable material, and a.lso because such contributions carry a £ for £ subsidy if put. through tlhe proper channels. All schools are asked to aim at an expenditure of not lass than from £2 to £5 th s year, and the instructor will be pleased to personally superintend all orders that may be placed in his hands. and where desired to make a suitable selection of shrubs, etc.. provided fitch requests are made ten to twelvo clear days hel'oro Arbor Day. The public park should sen's as a model for the laying out of school-grounds, but suggestivp... plans,, will bo sent to any teacher or committee desiring them on application to tho Instructor. ltules for the Arbor Da,y Competition will be posted to all schools in a few days. Thanking you in anticipation and also for your sympathetic attitude to this movement in previous issues.—l am etc. 4 WM. MARTIN, B. Sc., Agricultural Instructor. Timaru, July 9.
